Labour market information

26 March 2009

Diploma students need accurate, up-to-date and accessible labour market information (LMI) for their Diploma learning as well as for their career planning. To meet this need, schools, colleges and 14-19 partnerships are looking for reliable and relevant sources of national and local LMI which they can turn into attractive and user-friendly learning materials. I am delighted to be your guest blogger from now until the end of April. Please post your questions and comments about how we can develop LMI for the Diplomas in this blog. I would also love to hear about your local initiatives to strengthen LMI for young people. Using LMI to enhance IAG for young people has been a long-standing interest of mine. I have been closely involved in the development of the National Guidance Research Forum website (http://www.guidance-research.org), a particular feature of which is its high quality, impartial labour market information, produced in collaboration with the Sector Skills Councils. If you have not visited the 'LMI Future Trends' section before, do have a look round. You may also be particularly interested in the online learning module specifically designed for those wanting to learn about LMI in practice. I look forward to hearing from you.

Effects of recession on graduate employment

Hi all,

You might want to visit this link to the Warwick website:

http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/careers/hub/films/recessionproofing/

It's one of the careers advisers interviewing the CEO of the Association of Graduate Recruiters talking about the effects of recession on graduate employment.

Kind regards, Jenny

LMI

Great to hear of the approaches being taken in Plymouth and Portsmouth and to see that careers coordinators are taking a proactive stance - thanks Sarah and Jenny for this!

Funky LMI

Hi all,

I have been working with Plymouth 14-19 Partnership writing some LMI materials for their Year 9 students. All the subject areas broadly relate to the Diploma lines of learning and PDF's of these should be available shortly on CEGNET. Happy to send anyone an example so you can see what we have been doing.

LMI materials for Diploma Lines

Hi Jenny

I am working for Connexions in Northamptonshire and looking at producing LMI materials and would be very interested in seeing an example of what you have been doing in Plymouth.

Thanks

Liz

LMI

Hi all

There are some examples of good practice out there, I am happy to report! For example Portsmouth City Council run a website called Job Café which all the local schools and colleges can access. This contains LMI and vacancy information for the whole city area and is kept up to date.

I have also found that the schools that are organising their own work experience tend to also have strong LMI materials in school as they are able to gather the information from their contacts.

I have also met some very proactive careers co-ordinators who are designing materials and events to promote LMI to their students, and by engaging employers in these activities, have created many opportunties for the diploma students to access work experience.

Cheers Sarah

Hi, Jenny. I must admit, I

Hi, Jenny. I must admit, I do have problems with LMI. I think the issues for me tend to fall into 2 groups - firstly, I wonder [in a volatile world] how confident we can be in making statements about likely increases/decreases in jobs in certain sectors. For e.g. - construction was booming until recently - now many of the sites are standing idle. I know the LMI messages about upskilling and employability still stand, but still ...

Secondly - how do we get LMI over to young people in an interesting way? Any suggestions welcome!

Industry Trails

Hi Linda

Do have a look at the Teachers TV programme on designing a local industry trail which students follow using PDA/smartphones instead of clipboards (http://www.teachers.tv/video/24422). It was made at Elisabeth Garrett Anderson College in Islington where Michelle Obama recently told the girls that it is cool to be smart!

A lot of LMI is written by and for economists so it is not that user-friendly, but I agree with Sarah that there are a lot of talented teachers and advisers out there who are doong some really interesting things locally. We'd love them to get in touch through the IAG community!

I agree with Linda - I don't

I agree with Linda - I don't think we can give hard LMI to young people but rather teach them where they can find this (via websites which as least such be regularly updated); issues aroubds impartiality in information and how to apply the information to their own ideas. See also my blog re the top ten fastest growing occupations - this level of LMI is fun and the list is updated

LMI in a very general sense (as Linda mentions employability and skills etc) is very 'teachable' through using career path diagrams, quizes, scenarios, card marching exercises etc - there are a lot of general messages that learners should learn about e.g. hot desking, down sizing, contracting out, the implications of working freelance, some of the reasons for economic change etc. I think this level of LMI is far more interesting and revevant than precise LMI about different occuptaional areas.

Excuse the rambling - working late!

Chris
