New professional development resource launched

14 November 2008

The prospect of expanding your CPD to prepare for Diploma delivery may at first seem daunting. But a lot of research is taking place into the skills, knowledge and attributes required – and this can help you address the unique challenges of the Diploma.

Schools, colleges and institutions are now immersed in the first phase of delivery, and as the practical learning benefits of the Diploma emerge, all those involved will seek to ensure they provide effective and engaging learning. Professional development can empower you to apply existing expertise effectively, and enhance the skills that will engage learners in the classroom.

For the past two years, Lifelong Learning UK has been working with the Training and Development Agency for Schools to research the skills, knowledge and attributes that practitioners require to deliver the Diploma effectively.

An updated guide to assist with the planning of professional development for Diploma practitioners has recently been published. A Guide to Support the Professional Development of Diploma Teachers (2008) identifies and explains the specific areas of teaching in which practitioners can enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding for Diploma delivery.

The guide provides a foundation to identify and plan professional support and development, and is a valuable resource for staff development managers and continuous professional development leaders.

The areas in which Diploma teachers can enhance their skills and knowledge through professional development are identified as:

  • applied learning
  • assessment for and of learning
  • collaborative working
  • developing reflective practice
  • generic learning skills
  • information, advice and guidance
  • personalised learning.

These areas of development are mapped to professional standards for teachers in both schools and in further education colleges, making it possible to identify and assess whether relevant skills and knowledge have been gained.

You can use the guide to support your personal development plan, alongside the practical development activities available within My Development.
