Pugh's cartoon in today's Daily Mail has a Job Centre adviser saying to a goofy job-seeker 'I understand you're looking for a nine to five minutes past job'! In normal times a joke like this would warrant a smile at the very least; but pointedly on the adviser's desk is a report entitled 'Part-time Nation'. The hidden and overt unemployment and underemployment that we are seeing today is a real worry. Those young people, for example, who are affected are missing out on a vital stage of their career development and wellbeing.
This week the Government published its response to the Milburn report on fair access to the professions. Unleashing aspiration, as it is called, is going to be very difficult in the present economic climate. Nevertheless, the commitment to raising aspirations, improving careers advice and creating a network of inspirational mentors is welcome. It is packed with recommendations so do follow the link if you're interested (http://interactive.bis.gov.uk/unleashingaspiration/).
At the same time, the Government announced the setting up of a Career Profession Task Force chaired by Dame Ruth Silver. Its aim is to review the training and professional development needs of advisers and staff in schools who have critical roles in delivering and stregthening the effectiveness of CEIAG. What are your views on what's needed? Do get in touch. Next month, we'll also be discussing this in the Hot Topics blog.
