Barbie's new career

10 February 2010

Barbie is about to change her career for the 125th time! You couldn't make this up! In 1959, she started as a teenage model and in 1963 she became an executive. She has also been a rap musician, NBA player and presidential hopeful (on four occasions).

In the run-up to the New York Toy Fair, people have been able to vote online to choose Barbie's next career move. Voters have five choices: surgeon, architect, computer engineer, news anchor, and environmentalist.

Claire spotted this story on http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/02/09/help-barbie-land-her-next-job/ . There's much discussion about what Barbie could earn (surgeon earns the most), her job prospects after the recession (not good for architect) and what choice would send out the right signal to other women (the American Association of University Women are encouraging people to vote for her next career as a computer engineer to help encourage girls to explore science, technology, engineering and maths).

Sorry, it's too late to vote yourself; but you won't have long to wait for the announcement - the Fair starts on Friday!

Barbie's new careers

This really does raise the question - what will be in Barbie's new wardrobe - perhaps we could start a survey on what they think Barbie should wear on her first day as a computer engineer and how that might differ to and from the first. We need to remind her that there are many pitfalls involved. Think of Fiona Bruce wearing a crucifix etc...

Secondly we could run a competition to see the different progression routes Barbie could take to achieve these outcomes...

The scope is endless

Memories!

Hi Anthony

Yes prompted a response from me too! Took me back to not long after I qualified as a Careers Adviser (oh thats sounds like a nice job!) when I was co delivering a group session with an experienced Careers Adviser Ken, he introduced the session and me to 120, year 11 boys, by saying 'Good morning, we are from the Careers Service, I'm Ken and this is Barbie!! I never lived it down.

So Barbie has also been a Careers Adviser!

thanks Anthony

best wishes Jayne

Binary Babe

Fantastic! Do you want to know the results of the competition to choose a new career for Barbie in the autumn? She will have two new careers and outfits to match: computer engineer (which won the popular vote) and news anchor (which won the girls' vote)!

Anthony - you have really made me laugh - I keep saying that the world has done mad and this is final proof!

On a serious note we could do something similar in careers ed - perhaps with a more appropriate role model

THANKS

Chris
