Collaborative working for Creative and Media learners

17 February 2010

Learners taking the Diploma in Creative and Media in Thurrock 14-19 Partnership have embraced the spirit of the Diploma and are enjoying working with their peers at other schools in the area. Emma-Louise Fenton, line lead at the consortium, reports on a successful example of learners working collaboratively.

The most positive story from our consortium is that of behaviour and collaborative working. Our consortium delivery team is made up of staff from three different schools. Learners from each of the schools come together to study Creative and Media at South Essex College and form a total group of 45 learners.

Until early February they attended in their own school uniforms. However, they now have their own hooded sweatshirts, which were designed by them as a class, along with a customised logo as part of their coursework.

We feel that one of our biggest successes is the way that the learners have come together to forge new friendships and work together as a whole team regardless of the fact that they hadn’t laid eyes on each other just a few months ago.

The behaviour of the group as a whole has been quite remarkable. Even those individuals who are known to have behavioural issues in school that affect their learning are excelling on the Diploma course and have shown very good behaviour. They find the days at college really positive.

We have held many planning meetings with consortium members, employers and partners and where possible we have invited a small group of learners to attend – this has helped us to develop new units and to maximise their input.

We are extremely proud of all of our learners and their patience with us while we set things up.
