So I know what Diplomas are but what should I do next?

15 March 2010

Over the past 18 months many personal advisers have had CPD on the 14-19 reforms, especially Diplomas. Working at consortium or LA/Connexions wide level, training courses, briefings and conferences have been held the length and breadth of the land to upskill personal advisers on what 14-19 qualifications look like and what the changes mean for IAG.

Having run some sessions for PAs they often want help in planning how to further develop their knowledge especially about Diplomas and how they run locally. Working with Maria Powell from Telford and Wrekin, and Lianne Wyke Russell (Support and Development Partner - West Midlands) last year we decided to give the PAs some 'homework' to do after their Diploma training. Traditionally it has been good practice to encourage people to reflect on their CPD and consider what steps to take to develop their professional skills further and so we devised a simple 'homework' activity for them to do after the course - some even wanted to be able to e-mail this to their line manager and the results were discussed at future meetings.

Has anyone else done something similar?

So I know about Diplomas but what do I do next?

hi chris

Haven't done anything similar as yet, but here in Cambridgeshire we are just embarking on our next series of meetings specifically betwen Personal Advisers and the Diploma Line Leads. We do this consortium by consortium and concentrate on those Diplomas which are being delivered locally. I've downloaded your attachment and will give this to the PAs - so thanks for sharing this idea.

We've decided on several points that we're going to discuss:

  • the contents, levels of each Diploma offered in some detail and the Additional Specialist Learning offered alongside these
  • the process for selecting/interviewing students (Year 9 and Year 11)
  • the progression routes from these diplomas within the local area
  • how to involve PAs more
  • the key facts around all pathways which students need to know about (this will be new for Line Leads)
  • communication between careers coordinators, line leads and option choice managers (often curriculum deputies

Anymore ideas always welcome

Hi Sue This sounds like

Hi Sue

This sounds like really good practice Sue - I think getting the PAs to meet with the Line Leads is brilliant - then they can really get to the nitty gritty! Thanks for the ideas

Chris
